The Daily Mail Travel Says...

Forget the huge music events – pick culture, activity and family-focused alternatives for great days out in the English countryside

There was a time when visiting a festival as part of a cottage break would have seemed ludicrous. Festivals conjured up images of chemical toilets, burger vans and loud music, with a few healing tents or second-hand stalls to lighten the mix. You'd go to camp out and see music, or you wouldn't go at all – what would be the point?

Happily, times have changed. Though established music giants still get a disproportionate amount of attention, a new breed of relaxed, cultured events is bringing something very different to the festival scene. From vintage bike races in the Peak District to magical garden parties in the Cornish countryside, we've found four events that'd make a great centerpiece for your next UK cottage break – with no camping or trendy clothes required. Ready? Let's go…

Eroica Britannia 16-18 june 2017

"It may only be in its fourth year, but Eroica Britannia has pedigree: the idea comes from an annual vintage bike race that has been held in Tuscany since 1997. The British version swaps the Tuscan countryside for the rolling hills of the southern Peak District, and wraps it all up in a good-natured retro package. There's feelgood music (ABC and Norman Jay headline in 2017), a huge and well-stocked vintage fair and bags of brilliant food stalls. The race itself – which is more about lovely old bikes and fun vintage costumes than bagging medals or personal bests – takes place on the Sunday."
